Refresh your space for spring

Hi Friends,

With spring blossoming all around us, it’s the perfect moment to breathe new life into your living spaces. Let’s kick those winter blues to the curb and welcome the vibrant spirit of spring into our homes. In today’s chat, I’m sharing some easy tips and exciting ideas to help you transform your space and embrace this season of renewal.

  1. Spring Cleaning: The Ultimate Fresh Start

Before we dive into the fun stuff, let’s tackle the less glamorous but oh-so-satisfying task of spring cleaning. It’s time to declutter, dust off those nooks and crannies, and give your space a top-to-bottom scrub. And don’t forget to let the sunshine in by cleaning those windows and freshening up curtains and upholstery.

  1. Splash of Spring Colour

Let’s talk colour! One of the quickest ways to infuse spring into your home is through a playful palette. Say goodbye to those dark winter hues and say hello to pastels, soft greens, and cheerful yellows. Swap out heavy throws and cushions for lighter, brighter options. And why not bring the outdoors in with a vase of fresh flowers that not only add colour but also a delightful fragrance?

  1. Accessory Upgrade

Your decor deserves a seasonal makeover too. Swap out art and prints for ones that celebrate spring. Consider changing up your table settings with colourful dishes and linens. Even small changes like new coasters or candles can refresh the vibe in a big way.

  1. Nature’s Touch

Spring is all about nature’s grand awakening, so why not invite it inside? Live plants and potted herbs do wonders for your space and your mood. Plus, they improve indoor air quality. Think succulents, ferns, or spring-blooming bulbs to liven up your space.

  1. Let the Light Shine In

As we bid adieu to heavy curtains and drapes, consider letting in more natural light. Swap them out for sheer or lightweight fabrics that brighten up your rooms. If you value privacy, bamboo blinds or shades will let the filtered light in while maintaining a sense of openness.

  1. Rugs – Lighten Up

In winter, we tend to gravitate toward plush, warm rugs. For spring, think about swapping them out for lighter, more breathable options or even going rug-free to showcase those clean, gleaming floors.

  1. Mix It Up: Furniture Shuffle

Give your space a fresh vibe by moving things around. Experiment with different furniture layouts to maximize natural light, improve traffic flow, and create cozy conversation corners.

  1. Scent-sational Ambiance

Set the mood with delightful scents that embody the season. Essential oil diffusers or scented candles with fragrances like lavender, citrus, or fresh linen can transport you to a spring garden in an instant.

  1. Nature-Inspired Decor

Consider incorporating natural elements like branches, twigs, or stones into your decor. A vase filled with freshly cut branches or a bowl of river rocks can add a touch of the outdoors to your space.

  1. Embrace Minimalism: Declutter & Simplify

Spring is all about renewal, so let’s embrace minimalist principles. Donate or store items you no longer need, and focus on keeping only what truly adds value to your life.

  1. Extend Living Spaces: Outdoors!

As the weather warms up, why not extend your living space outdoors? Create a cozy verandah or balcony with comfy seating, vibrant cushions, and potted plants. It’s the perfect spot to savour your morning coffee or soak in the afternoon sun.

  1. DIY Fun: Get Crafty

Get your creative juices flowing with some fun DIY projects. Think about painting a piece of furniture in a cheerful spring colour, crafting your own artwork, or creating seasonal centrepieces.

  1. Eco-Friendly Choices: Go Green

As we renew our homes, let’s also renew our commitment to the environment. Opt for sustainable materials, energy-efficient lighting, and eco-friendly products. Let’s make our homes as green as the season outside.

  1. Personalise Your Space

And finally, add those personal touches that make your space uniquely yours. Display cherished family photos, travel souvenirs, or sentimental items that bring joy and nostalgia into your home.

Spring is a season of transformation, not just in nature but also in our homes. It’s a time to shed the old and welcome the new, to infuse our living spaces with the vibrant energy of blooming flowers and the gentle warmth of longer days. With the tips we’ve explored today, you can embark on this journey of renewal, bringing a touch of spring’s magic into every corner of your home.

Think of it as a canvas waiting for your creativity to paint upon. Whether you decide to go all out with a grand makeover or simply make subtle changes, the key is to make your space feel like a reflection of your personal springtime optimism. Each shift, no matter how small, contributes to the overall sense of renewal and revitalization that this season brings.

It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating an environment that uplifts your spirits, invigorates your senses, and wraps you in the comfort of your own personal sanctuary. So, as you embark on your spring home refresh journey, remember that it’s not just about following trends or adhering to a specific style. It’s about crafting a space that resonates with you, a space that welcomes you with open arms after a long day and inspires you to embrace the beauty of each season.

And if you ever find yourself in need of guidance, inspiration, or simply want to discuss how we can assist you in bringing the essence of spring into your home, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help you make your home your own piece of springtime paradise.

Here’s to a season filled with the joy of renewal, the warmth of sunlight, and the beauty of fresh beginnings.

Green Interior Design

In a world that’s increasingly focused on environmental sustainability and mindful living, your home can become more than just a place to reside; it can be a sanctuary that aligns with your values. As an interior designer, I am passionate about helping you embrace green living through sustainable interior design.

Green Interior design focuses on creating comfortable homes which simultaneously enhance indoor air quality, minimise waste and water usage through energy-efficient optimisation, prioritise eco-conscious choices in furnishing and decorating your home, all while ensuring sustainable functionality.

We can all feel the weather is changing and climate change is becoming a bigger issue as the years go on. That is why I believe sustainable interior design is so important. Every little thing that we can do in our homes and daily lives can make a huge difference. If each of us were able to embrace a sustainable home, we can help to save the planet and preserve our natural resources for our future generations.

Here are some ways that you can create a sustainable home:

  1. Sustainable Materials:

At the heart of green living is the choice of materials. Opt for sustainable options like reclaimed wood, bamboo, and recycled glass for flooring, furniture, and decor. These materials not only reduce your carbon footprint but also infuse your space with natural charm.

  1. Energy Efficiency:

Sustainable living goes hand in hand with energy efficiency. Choose LED or CFL lighting to reduce electricity consumption. Install smart thermostats and appliances to maximize energy savings.

  1. Indoor Air Quality:

Your home’s air quality plays a crucial role in your well-being. Prioritize low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints, finishes, and adhesives to ensure clean, fresh air indoors. Incorporate indoor plants that act as natural air purifiers.

  1. Thoughtful Space Planning:

Effective space planning not only enhances functionality but also reduces energy consumption. Arrange furniture to make the most of natural light and ventilation. This not only conserves energy but also creates a more comfortable living environment.

  1. Sustainable Textiles:

Consider textiles made from organic or sustainable materials such as organic cotton, hemp or flax. These textiles are not only eco-friendly but also offer comfort and style.

  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

Embrace the mantra of “reduce, reuse, recycle” in your design. Explore upcycled furniture, recycled glass countertops, and salvaged architectural elements to create unique and sustainable spaces. We love finding one of a kind second hand pieces on facebook marketplace or gumtree. Quality second hand furniture and accessories can add some variety to your space but also reduce the amount of packaging going into landfill from buying new and aims to reduce the amount of stuff that everyone is buying.

  1. Energy-Efficient Appliances:

Invest in energy-efficient appliances that not only reduce your environmental impact but also lower utility bills. Look for ENERGY STAR-rated products that combine performance with sustainability.

  1. Eco-Friendly Decor:

Decorate with a purpose. Choose decor items made from sustainable or recycled materials to infuse your space with character and conscience. Support local artisans who create eco-friendly pieces.

  1. Sustainable Lifestyle:

Your home is a reflection of your lifestyle. Consider incorporating green living practices like composting and responsible waste management into your daily routine. Small changes can make a big difference. There are some amazing products now, like beautiful benchtop composting bins that you can find. Check out Seed and Sprout for some great options.

Embracing green living isn’t just a trend; it’s a commitment to a better, more sustainable future. Sustainable interior design is a creative and fulfilling way to contribute to this commitment. By carefully selecting materials, improving energy efficiency, prioritising air quality, embracing minimalism, choosing sustainable furniture, and practicing the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), you can transform your living space into a beautiful, eco-conscious haven that benefits both you and the planet. Start your journey toward green living today and watch your home flourish into an oasis of sustainability and style. If you need any extra help or tips, drop me a DM – I would love to help.

Airbnb Styling

Having a beautifully styled airbnb is essential nowadays to get regular bookings, good rental rates and the right guests. Modern travellers are becoming more and more discerning and are spoiled with choice. A well-thought-out, attractive design can drive more bookings and bring back repeat customers. Styling your Airbnb can transform it into a charming and unforgettable stay. Here are some tips to help you create a beautiful Airbnb that guests will love: Improve the bathroom: Replace old faucets, showerheads, and towel bars with sleek, modern designs. Add storage solutions like shelves or hooks for guests’ toiletries and towels. Ensure the bathroom is well-lit and consider adding a mirror with built-in lighting. Enhance the kitchen: Update cabinet hardware, install a new backsplash, or replace the countertops to give the kitchen a fresh look. Ensure that all appliances are in good working order and provide all necessary cooking utensils and supplies.  Install smart home technology: Consider adding a smart lock for keyless entry, a smart thermostat for energy efficiency, or smart plugs to control lighting. These features can make your Airbnb more attractive to tech-savvy guests. Maximise storage: Add shelves, hooks, or closet organisers to help guests store their belongings neatly during their stay. Provide ample hangers in closets and luggage racks for suitcases. Another tip is making sure that everything is in the right spot and easily accessible for your guests. Refresh the paint: A fresh coat of paint can instantly transform a space, making it feel clean and updated. Choose neutral colours for a universally appealing look, or add a pop of colour with an accent wall.  Carpet and Flooring: Does your carpet/flooring need to be replaced or does it need a good clean? It is important that everything is clean and presentable throughout the entire home. Update the lighting: Replace outdated fixtures with modern designs, and ensure that each room has adequate lighting. Consider adding floor lamps, table lamps, or wall sconces to create a cozy ambiance.  Focus on outdoor spaces: If your Airbnb has a yard or patio, make sure it’s clean and inviting. Add comfortable seating, outdoor lighting, and a BBQ or fire pit if possible. LINEN AND ACCESSORIES Upgrade the bedding: Invest in high-quality linens, pillows, and duvets to create a comfortable and inviting sleeping environment. Choose neutral colours or simple patterns that will appeal to a wide range of guests. Use high-quality linens: Invest in high-quality bed linens, towels, and pillows to ensure your guests have a comfortable stay. This small detail can make a significant difference in their overall experience. I love Cultiver Goods and Eco Down Under for bed linen. You could add luxe soaps and shampoos to the bath and shower area to make the entire experience memorable.  Accessorise: Enhancing your Airbnb’s theme is all about the details. You want to add beautiful styling items to help enhance the space. For a rustic cabin vibe, cozy textiles like plaid blankets and wooden accents create warmth. Coastal getaways benefit from nautical colors, beach finds, and soothing ocean sounds. In sleek urban lofts, industrial accents, minimalist decor, and modern art pieces infuse an urban feel. Consistency is key; ensure your accessories, colours, and patterns align with your theme to transform your space into a memorable guest experience.     Selecting the right furniture and styling your Airbnb can make a significant impact on the overall guest experience. Here are some tips to help you create a comfortable and inviting space:  Choose a cohesive design theme: Select a design theme that reflects the location and vibe of your Airbnb. This could be modern, rustic, coastal, or minimalist. Stick to this theme when selecting furniture and accessories to create a cohesive look. Opt for neutral colours: When choosing large furniture pieces like sofas and beds, opt for neutral colours such as grey, beige, or white. This will make it easier to change the accent colours and decor without having to replace the furniture.  Invest in quality, comfortable furniture: Prioritise comfort when selecting seating and sleeping options. Choose a high-quality mattress, supportive pillows, and cozy seating options to ensure guests have a comfortable stay. Maximize functionality: Look for versatile furniture pieces that can serve multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed, a coffee table with storage, or a dining table that can be extended. This will help you maximize the available space in your Airbnb.  Add personal touches: Incorporate artwork, decorative objects, and soft furnishings that reflect the chosen design theme. These details can make your Airbnb feel more unique and welcoming.  Use area rugs: Area rugs can add warmth, texture, and colour to a space. They also help define different areas within an open-concept layout.  Prioritise lighting: Good lighting is crucial for creating a comfortable atmosphere. Include a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting in each room. Consider adding dimmer switches or smart bulbs to allow guests to adjust the lighting to their preferences.  tyle the outdoor spaces: If your Airbnb has a balcony, patio, or yard, make sure to furnish and style these spaces as well. Provide comfortable seating, outdoor lighting, and plants or flowers to create an inviting outdoor area.  Keep it clutter-free: Avoid overcrowding the space with too many decorative items or personal belongings. Aim for a clean, organized, and stylish look that appeals to a wide range of guests. Remember to regularly update and maintain your furniture and decor to keep your Airbnb looking fresh and inviting for future guests. I hope this will give you some confidence when it comes to styling your Airbnb. If you need any additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Brand Collective. Detox Your Home in 4 Steps

Gain the wellbeing benefits of living in a healthier living space

The space we live in has a massive impact on our health, mental wellbeing and overall happiness. With everything that happens in our day-to-day life, we don’t often stop and pay attention to the little things that may affect our mood. This is part of why it’s so important to take the time to step back and reorientate ourselves. Since a clear space around us reflects a clear space within each of us, Naomi Brand from Brand Collective Property Styling has put together 4 ways to detox your home and give yourself a healthier mindset.

De-clutter and breathe life back into your home

When I’m styling someone’s home, one of the first things I notice is an abundance of items in every room taking up unnecessary space. This can be gifts that never went to good use, appliances we don’t use anymore, or sentimental items.

Of course, life is about the little, sentimental moments and a lot of these items represent that. A lot of smaller items are kept around by habit though, and serve only to remove space in your home, making you feel like you have less room around you.

For every room, it’s important to look at each particular item and ask yourself if it helps the space or hinders it.

Create a sense of harmony and remove conflict

Creating cohesion in your home gets rid of any confusion in the space. This can be as simple as minimising the amount of strong colours to a few complimentary tones in each room. Another great way to create cohesion is to identify the style you want in each room and focus on that type of furniture. Mixing styles like contemporary, mid-century modern, coastal and classical can work in select situations, but it’s always safe to let one style take over a room.

Think of every room as having its own identity – when you remove conflicting colours, shapes and styles, while honing in one particular style, you are defining that identity. This brings clarity to your home, ultimately removing conflict, which helps give you a more peaceful state of mind when you’re at home.

Let your home tell a story

Your home is defined by the story you are telling. It’s really all in the details. The way you use different textures and colours to create a mood. It’s in using certain styles and eras of furniture to bring context into your home. Sometimes creating a story is as simple as feature walls or moulding a room around a central piece of furniture with a strong personality.

Most of all, all good stories have a climax – what is the most impactful and breathtaking part of your home? Is it a view? An outdoor area? A captivatingly styled dining room where all your friends and family come together? Find your home’s moment and let the whole home flow towards it, like any great narrative.

Stories in the home create connections, memories and flow throughout the rooms. Let your home reveal the story it wants to tell.

Give your space a sense of personality

This one is simple but it’s so often overlooked. It’s about balancing the removal of clutter while still maintaining a sense of who you are in your home. What does the space you live in say about you?

Creating a clearer space in your home is essential to giving yourself healthier mental wellbeing, but it doesn’t mean that you have to take away all sentimental possessions that mean something to you. We all have pieces we can’t live without and that’s exactly what life is about – holding on to the things that matter to us and make us happy, while getting rid of anything that only takes up space. That’s really the core value in detoxing your home.

The First 3 Things An Interior Designer Notices in Every Home by Naomi Brand

Enjoy our article as seen in Better Homes and Gardens.

Natural light

For me, every space is inescapably defined by the presence of natural light. When a room is isolated and confined, it can feel cold and separate from the home – which can be lifted by innovative skylights, window placement or even by inventive interior styling. There isn’t really a substitute for natural light in a home, but in a tight spot you can use colour, reflective surfaces and soft and warm lights to help make the space feel more welcoming and connected to the rest of the home.

Features that date the house

Feature walls and daring choices of architectural materials can really bring personality to a home – but one thing to always keep in mind is that while these choices can be on-trend, they also anchor your home in a specific time and place. Future-proofing your home is such an important part of interior design, so always consider what part of a feature really defines you now but doesn’t hold back your home as your personal home styling evolves.

The ‘moment’ of the home’s story

Think of you home as a place that tells a story as you move through it. Every home has its ‘moment’ – a defining feature that leaves an impression which stays with us long after we’ve left. Often this is the first thing we think when we remember the entire home. This can be a scenic view, a burst of natural light in an open space, even a stunning outside area that opens up the home. Whatever the ‘moment’ of your home – make sure that moment shines – keep your view open and unobstructed, keep the light coming in and keep your outside area warm, welcoming and dynamic. Moments like these are not to be missed.

3 Trends That Need to be Retired in 2019

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-Century Modern style is a bold statement but it has two major problems. With strong colours, curved shapes and saturated tone timbers, the pieces can be almost impossible to pair with a neutral room and furniture from any other period.  As a result the home can feel ill-fitted, conflicted and dated – so I think it’s time to say goodbye to last century and hello to this one.

Overt Industrial

Not many people realise but the industrial restaurants and bars we see everywhere, with their rustic appeal, rusty light fixtures and dark colours actually came about almost by accident. To make sure that ceiling heights met regulations, many ceilings were removed and vents were left exposed. This forced a lot of venues to embrace the industrial look – to go hard rather than go home. But as cutting edge as this look is, a lot of homes are moving towards a warmer look, rather than importing style from these venues, which is great because it encourages creativity and personal expression. Uniqueness turns every person into a designer and a stylist.

Reflexive minimalism

Minimalism is fantastic when you are selling a house as it allows people to project their lives into the home. In home styling however the opposite is true – bringing your personality out is crucial to building a warm, interesting space. I personally love minimalism’s bold geometric shapes, monochrome shades and contrasting textures because it resonates with my personal style. What needs to be thrown out in 2020 is the need for people to be so minimal as a knee jerk reaction, as over time this will prevent them from being creative. I encourage people to make mistakes and reinvent their style so that it never turns stale. Being adventurous and seeking new discoveries is key to interior styling.

10 tips for preparing your home for Sale!

Styling your property for sales produces a lasting impact on potential buyers making your property captivating and memorable which in turn increases your sales price. It’s even more important with the current market!

Here are my 10 tips on how to achieve this:

1. Start with a neat entrance, first impressions count! This may mean re-mulching the garden, updating the letterbox or re-painting the front door.

2. De-clutter and de-personalize. Buyers want to imagine themselves living there so taking down some personal photos is a good start. Also take out the furniture and accessories you don’t need. Buyers like to see space whilst still showcasing only the necessary, key items required for that space.

3. A fresh coat of neutral paint inside will open the space up and keep it feeling fresh.

4. Understand the space and its best aspects. Find the focal point of your home and lead the buyers there! This may be an ocean view, a north facing aspect or even a spacious living room.

5. Layout is one of the most important elements to get right. Re-arrange your furniture to open up the space. This creates flow throughout the home. Avoid cutting rooms off with items as it can make a space feel smaller.

6. Bring in colours through the addition of soft furnishings and artwork to create an experience for the buyers. Stick to 2-3 colours max and nothing too overpowering. Always pull your colour palette from your artwork as this creates connection.

7. Introduce ambient lighting throughout the home. Table and floor lamps create an inviting and welcoming atmosphere.

8. Use floor rugs to define zones especially when working with an open plan. Each space should be its own! Stay neutral in colour and keep it light.

9. Maximise your space! If you have a nook area not being used, style it as a cute study or reading nook. This adds value and interest from buyers.

10. Freshen up your window treatments. No blinds are better than old ones! Opt for neutral blinds or sheer curtains.

6 Tips to making your bedroom a Sanctuary

Your Bedroom should be your sanctuary. It’s the space we go to, to unwind, rest and rejuvenate. Therefore, mindful steps should be taken when styling this space. Ie: choice in colours, lighting and materials as this will have an impact on your emotional response. Think soft palettes, comfortable luxe textures and sensitive lighting.

Here’s our 6 top tips on how to create:

1. Stick to a soft colour palette. You want to avoid anything too bright or overpowering. Think more mixing your textures than your hues.

2. Always, always have bedside table lamps. These are so important yet easy to forget. Lighting plays such an important role in a space. In darker living areas for example we might use brighter globes to make a space brighter and more inviting, However, in the bedroom we suggest soft lighting which will instantly relax you and prepare the body for shut down. Its all about AMBIENCE!

3. Install sheer curtains, even if over the top of roller blinds or block out curtains. This instantly softens the space and adds a feel of luxury.

4. Invest in a bedhead. These are a statement pieces in the bedroom. Linen bedheads are especially comfortable behind the head.I personally prefer bedheads to artwork as I feel they are more functional.

5. Add a wall mirror. Round ones are my personal favourite for bedrooms as they break up all the geometrical shapes in the room. They are also great for creating the illusion of space and reflect light! So a must if you have little natural light- you need to make the most of it!

6. A stunning floor rug under the bed is also one of my favourite additions. It doesn’t matter if you’re working with carpet or floorboards, the addition of the right rug can take your bedroom to another level! Remember to position the floor rug ¾ under the bed and ¼ exposed at the end of the bed depending on the size of the room (if larger, you can go ½ & ½). This frames the bed as the hero of the room ad again gives your space the extra feeling of luxe, which is what we all want! If space allows also throw an ottoman at the end of the bed. Great for when your putting shoes on!

The mindful message in the Konmari method and the Top 5 AMAZING things you will get out of it.

Unless you have been in a monastery with monks contemplating the meaning of life it’s impossible to have missed the decluttering craze that is sweeping the world.

With a polite and peaceful take on decluttering Marie Kondo invites a mindful and grateful practice into decluttering your home which in turn results in decluttering your mind and life!

Each episode of her top rated Netflix original series showcases a household at breaking point. Now let’s make this clear, these houses do not look like those of hoarders, these are regular everyday homes that over the years have simply collected too many belongings.

It can happen to any of us and often subconsciously as the clutter builds externally in our home  so too does the clutter in our mind. These overstuffed drawers and wardrobes are just another list of building “to dos’ that you need to get around to doing but never do.

As an Interior stylist the first step in a transformation is to de clutter. Clearing a path and space for a new beginning is so important.

Beyond just creating 3 piles, “keep”, “charity” and “throw out”. Marie first tells you to stop for a minute and thank your home.

Being mindful for a minute and grateful to have this wonderful home that has kept you sheltered warm and safe creates an open mindset before your declutter.

Does this spark joy? It’s a question you have never asked yourself really when it comes to your belongings but it is a hugely important one.

As I say to my clients, your home is your haven and it is so important to create a home you love and surround yourself with things that bring you joy!

By putting your hand on each item of clothing and seeing if you get that little pang of excitement you can easily identify the items that need to go!

By only keeping the items that make you feel great you are creating a home of inspiration instead of a collection of to do lists and cluttered wardrobes. This tidying technique enables her clients to acquire the mindset needed to stay tidy forever rather than just doing a big declutter once a year or during council clean ups.

It is important once you have gone through the mindful practice of only keeping items that spark joy that you organise them with a purposeful fold or create specific homes for each item. “Putting things away,” she writes, “creates the illusion that the clutter problem has been solved.”

Part of the success of this method is applying this same mindset in your everyday life.

After you have completed this process your home will bring you more joy, with only your favourite items showcased and everything organised with its own place.

You will have more time to do the things you love because you are not worrying about your constant “to do list” at home.

You will feel more stylish-Your wardrobe will inspire you instead of worrying what to wear as you will know that every outfit you select will be one you feel great in.

You will save time getting ready- as above!

Create a fresh beginning and new canvas to invite more joy into your life, build on this fresh start and create a home you love.

As a sales person in a competitive market we are always looking for the best. Naomi from Band Collective delivered the best styling package by far. She was a great communicator and worked well with our clients which assisted us in getting a great result. Property styling can make a huge difference to the final result. I would highly recommend Naomi to anyone looking for a professional.
